COACHING CERTIFICATION LEVELS

Please note:  Applicants must pass a mandatory background check through the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) to be issued a USARS coaching membership.  More information on the background screening process can be found here:  http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Roller-Sports/Resources/For-Coaches/Background-Checks.aspx

Level 1 Registered Coach

Individuals interested in becoming a USA Roller Sports member coach must submit a coach’s application and fees to the USARS National Office.  Upon receipt of the application, the USARS National Office will send the applicant instructions on completing the background screening, a rule book and test.  The test is open-book and must be returned to the national office for evaluation.  After passing the background check and basic coaching skills test the applicant will be issued a Level 1 Registered Coach membership.  Level 1 certification is only valid for one year.  After your initial registration, you must upgrade to Level 2. 

Level 2 Certified Coach

Level 1 member coaches are required to advance to Level 2 after their first year of membership.  The applicant must submit the Level 2 Certified Coach application and fees to the USARS National Office. Upon receipt of the application, the USARS National Office will send the applicant a rule book, certified coaching skills study guide and test. The test is open-book and must be returned to the national office for evaluation. After passing the certified coaching skills test and verifying the background screening clearance, the applicant will be issued a Level 2 Certified Coach membership.  Certification at this level is for two years provided the coach maintains membership with USARS.  After two years, certification must be extended by participation in an approved conference or seminar, producing national championship placements, attending the world championships or successfully passing a home assessment test. 

Level 3 Advanced Coach:

USA Roller Sports member coaches wishing to become a Level 3 Advanced Coach must have held a Level 2 Certified Coach membership for two years and submit a Level 3 Advanced Coach application and fees to the USARS national office.  The USARS national office will send the applicant an advanced coaching skills study guide.  Advanced Coach’s testing may be conducted at an authorized USARS coach’s conference, the National Championships, or arranged in conjunction with an approved proctor.  The test is open-book for Speed skating, closed book for Figure Sakting and must be proctored by an approved USARS representative.  After passing the advanced coaching skills test and verifying the background screening clearance, the applicant will be issued a Level 3 Advanced Coach membership.  Certification at this level is for three years provided the coach maintains membership with USARS.  After three years, certification must be extended by participation in an approved conference or seminar, producing national championship placements, attending the world championships or successfully passing a home assessment test. 

Level 4 Elite Coach:

To become a Level 4 Elite Coach an application must be submitted to the Elite Coaches committee for their approval. The application asks for a list of the coaches’ accomplishments and contributions to the sport. Once Elite status has been awarded, membership must be renewed each year as an active coach; however, the Elite status has no expiration date and no further certification testing is required.

 

COACHES CERTIFICATION EXTENSION APPLICATION

Coaches Clinics/Conferences:

Coaches that host, assist with or attend a local or regional clinic over the course of the season may have their certification credentials extended one year.  These events must be preapproved by the USARS National Office prior to the event in order for individuals to receive extensions.  These events cannot be used to upgrade to the next coaching level only extend current level.

USARS National Traveling Seminars/Clinics:

USA Roller Sports reaches out to the coaches, officials and skaters with their Traveling Seminar Clinic Workshops in different locations across the nation with topics that can include sports science, nutrition and sport psychology, as well as any new coaching techniques and discipline-specific skating demonstrations and discussion of new requirements and rules.  Seminar discussion and “on skates” clinic workshops are a part of the continuing education for the attendees during the traveling seminars.  Attendance at the traveling seminars/clinics may extend an individual’s Certified or Advanced coaching status for two (2) years.  These events cannot be used to upgrade to the next coaching level, only extend current level.

National Championships:

If you coached a national champion or at least two podium placements at the previous year’s National Championships, submit to the USARS National Office for verification to be considered for a one-year certification extension per champion or two podium placements.  National placements cannot be used to upgrade to the next coaching level, only extend current level.

World Championships:

If approved, attending the World Championships may extend a coach’s credentials for one year.

It is the coach’s responsibility to submit the attendance verification to the USARS National Office at the time of application.  World Championship attendance cannot be used to upgrade to the next coaching level, only extend current level.    

Special Projects

Preapproved special projects, such a contributing articles for the USARS magazine and website, may also qualify for certification extension.

It is the applicant's responsibility to apply for credential extension on the annual renewal form.

Attendance at an event cannot be used to upgrade your level, only successfully passing an exam.

Credentials will not be extended for more than five years.
